The
nose knows
The
most sensitive of human noses doesn't come close to matching
the smelling power of an average dog nose. Dogs of all breeds
have amazingly capable noses. A dog's nasal region holds four
times more air, and contains forty-five times more olfactory
cells than a human's. A feature called the Jacobson's Organ
enables dogs to actually taste the surrounding air. Unlike humans,
dogs never stop noticing the smells around them, which can be
a mixed blessing. A walk through the neighborhood can expose
an animal to hundreds of different scents, which could prove
distracting. Fortunately, for many dogs, their favorite smell
is probably that of their owner.
